Shouganji Zen temple, near the front door

Today I have reached the one week mark at Shouganji Zen Retreat in Oita prefecture. It is a working zen temple and the monk is an amazing man called Jiho Jingo. We, whomever is also staying here at the temple (maximum of five people), must be in the temple by 5:30am when Jiho starts chanting. From 5:30am to 7am we meditate. We have some roasted tea and rest (no breakfast but more on that later). From 8:30am – 10:30am it’s temple chores time – weeding, cleaning etc. Then we go exploring. Lunch at 11:30am. More resting. Onsen at 4pm. Dinner at 5:30pm and lights out supposedly at 9pm. That, my friends is the extent of my days for the next MONTH. I am the luckiest person on the planet.
