Nature

There’s something about the wilderness of Japan, the light, the hundred shades of green and of course Mt Fuji. This is the Japan I love to lose myself in, where just around the corner you’ll meet a deer or a thousand-year-old tree.

Fujisan

For centuries, the rich and the poor, the artists and the scientists, the samurai and the commoners have marvelled, worshipped, studied and reflected on the breathtaking beauty of Fujisan. I had so many photos of her that I started Fuji Fridays on my Instagram page. Here are a couple of my favourites. No matter how many times I see her, she still takes my breath away.

Street

In August 2020 I took up photography as a project to bring purpose and structure to my days at home during the chaos of the pandemic. As travel was out of the question, I explored the areas within walking distance from my home in the center of Tokyo. The streets of Tokyo are overflowing with ordered, chaotic beauty. My favourite streets in Japan are the traditional, local pathways, where you feel as though you are walking inside history and no-one knows your name.

Animals

When I started taking photos on a point and shoot camera, I mainly shot flowers to remind myself of the beauty in the world. Soon after in the Hokkaido wilderness, I met the red crowned crane, eagles, hawks, deer, foxes and of course, though not in the wilderness, the capybara, the cutest animal ever. Friendly and vegetarian, the capybara love a hot bath, particularly with yuzu (a Japanese citrus that helps them smell lovely).

Special Spots

Before moving to Tokyo for a second time in 2016, I had 11 extended holidays where I roamed free to remote places all over Japan. These are areas that hold a special place in my heart and hopefully some may show a different side of Japan.

Phoetry

A fusion of poetry and photography. In 2014, I wrote Shining Light, a book of poems and photos. I was hesitant to put words on top of photos. I have a Japanese painting of Fujisan with poetry and at an exhibition of ukiyo-e, I saw many prints with narratives and poems. So I started to explore phoetry. One day soon I hope to merge my three loves: words, photos and music.
